Summertime Doesn't Have To Kill Your Electric Bill

Blog

Once that cool air is replaced by the hot summer air, it's time to start cooling the house down so you and your family can be comfortable. The chances are that if you rely solely on the air conditioner to cool your house down, then you are going to see quite a spike in your electric bill. There are ways you can go about helping your air conditioner along so you can keep your home as cool as possible without yanking up the bills. Here are some tips you should follow:

Use gravity to your advantage

Heat rises and this is something that you want to keep in mind. In the hotter months you are going to want to put your ceiling fans so they go in a counter clockwise direction so the air gets pushed straight down. If you don't already have ceiling fans in all of the main rooms in the home, then you will find that it will be worth it for you to follow through with having them installed.

Use the breeze when you can

If you go outside first thing in the morning and you realize it's nice and cool with a nice breeze, then you should take advantage of the situation. Try getting that nice cooler morning air in your home while you can. This can prevent you from needing to turn on the air conditioner for a while. The best way to get the breeze going through your house is to open large windows on each end of the house. This will cause a strong cross breeze inside. If you have small pets or children, make sure inside doors are secured because the breeze can cause doors inside the house to slam shut hard and this can cause injuries. You can put a stopper in them, or set something like a shoe in the way so they can't slam.

Use window coverings and additions to help

There are various ways you can use different window coverings and other additions to help keep the house cooler. You can have awnings put up above the outside of your windows to provide them with shade. You can also trade out your current windows for double paned ones that provide extra insulation. There is reflective film you can put on the outsides of the windows to reflect the sun off the windows to help with the inside temperature as well.

Keeping up With Maintenance Between HVAC Inspections

Working with HVAC contractors is an important part of being a homeowner. Not only do your contractors ensure that a new system you buy is properly installed, but they also ensure optimal performance throughout the years through a series of regular inspections, maintenance services, and repairs. But there are lots of things you can do in between your contractor's visits to ensure that your HVAC investment is always in tip top condition, aside from cleaning out the air filters. After working with my dad for more than a decade in the HVAC business, I've put together a few methods homeowners can use to maintain a well working system, and I have published those tips and tricks right here on this blog. I hope some of the information you find here helps you on your journey as a homeowner!
