Can A Ductless HVAC System Break?

Blog

A ductless air conditioner system has many benefits, including added efficiency. However, they can have problems occasionally that are different from a traditional HVAC system. While a ductless system is designed to be convenient, they may need a repair that you may never have heard of before. The following are some of the more common issues that can happen to a ductless air conditioner system:

The Air Handler Can Fail

Ductless systems primarily work with a heat pump, but it works with several indoor handlers that are mounted to a wall. The air handlers are set up in the rooms you want to condition. If an air handler fails, it means it likely has a damaged or broken motor. Fortunately, a failed air handler does not mean the entire system needs an overhaul. You only need to have the one component repaired. It also means that the air in one room will not be the ideal temperature. The rest of your home should be comfortably tempered while you call for a repair on the failed air handler.

An Air Handler Can Leak

An air handler is connected to several lines to function. One of those lines carries excess water and moisture outside. Occasionally, these lines can leak. The lines are located behind the walls of the home. When a leak occurs, water will collect behind the wall and cause damage to your home. In addition to the water damage, the weakened wall cannot support an air handler. There is a high chance that the handler can fall completely off the wall. If you see any signs of water damage on a wall near an air handler, be sure to have the air handler repaired right away.

The System Can Lose Refrigerant

Any air conditioning system can leak refrigerant. If this happens, the system cannot effectively cool the air. The compressor can also suffer damage. Because the compressor is such an important part of an air conditioner, you need to have it repaired.

Unfortunately, a ductless system is more apt to lose refrigerant because there are more refrigerant lines associated with the system. If you notice any ice building up around the air handler, there is a high likelihood that the system needs a repair or a recharge of refrigerant.

A ductless air conditioner system is a great investment in your home, but you have to stay on top of any potential problems. If you notice anything off about your ductless air conditioning system, be sure to call your HVAC repair technician right away.

Keeping up With Maintenance Between HVAC Inspections

Working with HVAC contractors is an important part of being a homeowner. Not only do your contractors ensure that a new system you buy is properly installed, but they also ensure optimal performance throughout the years through a series of regular inspections, maintenance services, and repairs. But there are lots of things you can do in between your contractor's visits to ensure that your HVAC investment is always in tip top condition, aside from cleaning out the air filters. After working with my dad for more than a decade in the HVAC business, I've put together a few methods homeowners can use to maintain a well working system, and I have published those tips and tricks right here on this blog. I hope some of the information you find here helps you on your journey as a homeowner!
