In the cold of winter, you want to make sure that your house is as nice and warm as possible. So, if your furnace stops working, you want to make sure that you have it taken care of as soon as possible. You can call a repair service to come and check out your furnace so that they can see if they can fix the problem and get your furnace working again. There are things that you can do to make sure that you can tell the service technician what you think the problem is. If you can check out a few things, that will help the service tech find the source of the problem sooner.
Emergency Stop
Every furnace has an emergency stop switch. This will allow you to manually turn off the furnace suddenly if there is a problem. If you hit the button or flip the switch, it will immediately turn off your furnace until you are able to deal with whatever the issue is. The switch is generally high up near the ceiling or placed where it's going to be hit on accident. It will also be relatively close to the furnace. Check to see if the switch is in the on position or the off position. It is possible for the furnace to trip the switch on occasion, and that may be the case here too. Turn the switch back on and see what happens when you do. If the furnace keeps running, then you should be okay, but you may want to have a service technician come out and give your furnace a thorough checkup anyway.
Fuel Source
If you use heating oil for your furnace, you should also check to see if you have any fuel in your tanks. Most tanks will have a gauge on the top, which will let you know how much fuel you still have in your tank. You should go out and check the tank out and see if you need to have your tank refilled. If it is low, then your furnace may not have enough fuel to turn on, which is why it isn't working.
If you have checked over everything you can think of to look at and your furnace still isn't working, then you need to contact an HVAC company so that they can come to check out your furnace to see what the problem is and if they can get it working for you again.
