Noises Are Not Normal — Four Sounds A Furnace In Need Of Repair May Make

Blog

A properly functioning furnace will make a soft humming sound when it is in operation. Most people know their furnace is operating, but the noise sounds like white noise or background noise. If you hear other noises coming from your furnace, there is likely something wrong, and you may be in need of furnace repair. Here are four sounds that you may hear if you are in need of furnace repair and the repairs that may be needed.

Popping

One of the sounds that you may hear if your furnace needs a repair is a popping sound. The most common reason why you may hear a popping sound is that there is a problem with the ignitor on your gas furnace. The popping sound is made when the burner is dirty and the unit is having problems igniting. The furnace burner needs to be professionally cleaned to ensure that your furnace can continue operating as it should.

Rattling

There are two reasons why your furnace may be rattling. The problem that is easiest to fix is a loose panel on the furnace. Simply inspect your furnace and if there are any loose panels, tighten the nuts or bolts to solve the problem. If that does not solve the problem, you may be dealing with a cracked or broken heat exchanger. A cracked or broken heat exchanger can lead to carbon monoxide leaking into your home, so you should stop using your furnace if you hear unexplained rattling.

Squealing

Your furnace has a few different belts inside of the unit that operates different parts, including a motor belt and fan belt. If a belt is starting to loosen, crack or wear out, you may hear squealing noises when your furnace kicks on. Furnace repair is needed to identify the damaged belt and replace it.

Grinding

The final sound that you may hear if furnace repair is needed is a grinding sound. The most common reason why you may hear a grinding sound is that the motor bearings need to be replaced. Another problem that can cause grinding sounds is a broken blower wheel. A professional can determine why your furnace is making a grinding sound and make the necessary repairs.

If you hear new sounds coming from your furnace, you need to be aware that these new sounds are not normal. New sounds are an indicator that something is amiss with your furnace and repairs are needed. Reach out to your preferred furnace repair company to schedule an appointment to have your furnace inspected and repaired.

Keeping up With Maintenance Between HVAC Inspections

Working with HVAC contractors is an important part of being a homeowner. Not only do your contractors ensure that a new system you buy is properly installed, but they also ensure optimal performance throughout the years through a series of regular inspections, maintenance services, and repairs. But there are lots of things you can do in between your contractor's visits to ensure that your HVAC investment is always in tip top condition, aside from cleaning out the air filters. After working with my dad for more than a decade in the HVAC business, I've put together a few methods homeowners can use to maintain a well working system, and I have published those tips and tricks right here on this blog. I hope some of the information you find here helps you on your journey as a homeowner!
